[00:00:01] Speaker A: The best music from the 60s to today. IPL radio. And I am Amy. [00:00:10] Speaker B: And our main topic for today is like, celebrations that have been happening in the last week and this week. [00:00:18] Speaker A: Yeah, it's a busy week of celebrations. Right. [00:00:20] Speaker B: Very biggie. Very big week of celebrations. But before we get on to all that, let's go into a song. [00:00:31] Speaker A: What song are we going to head into? Sucker by John's brother, the Jonas Brothers. Let's do it. The best music from the 60s to today, IPL radio. And we are back. This is the family show from IPL Radio here in Rockingham, Western Australia. It's warming up a bit at the moment, isn't it? [00:00:59] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:01:00] Speaker A: So we had quite a cool February and then we've got some nice warm days coming into the beginning of autumn. [00:01:12] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:01:14] Speaker A: What is going on? So what are we talking about today? So on our show we always talk about a topic that we've been learning about because we are a homeschool family. If you haven't joined in before, and we have a topic today that we're going to talk about. What are we talking about today? [00:01:39] Speaker B: Like all the celebrations that are on this week. There's tons. [00:01:46] Speaker A: There are so many celebrations and so we are going to dive into a few of them and then we're going to look at one of the celebrations that was kind of last week. But you were keen to talk about that one, right? [00:02:02] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:02:04] Speaker A: So do you want me to go through all the celebrations or do you want to share some of the celebrations that you know are on this week? [00:02:13] Speaker B: You can tell us. [00:02:15] Speaker A: Yeah. So on the 2nd of March, we had clean up Australia Day. Yeah, yes. Do you know what that's about? [00:02:26] Speaker B: You go on the beach and like, get a bag of a bag or a bin or something and then like clean up rubbish off the beach. [00:02:36] Speaker A: Yeah, I think you can go anywhere. Like, if you're not living close to the beach, you can collect rubbish. And it's. It's just about looking after Australia and cleaning up the waste that has flown away. And definitely promoting putting waste in the correct locations, like bins and. And whatnot, not just throwing it out the window. [00:02:59] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:03:00] Speaker A: I think that's what it's all about. And then also on the 2nd of March is Dr. Seuss Day. [00:03:08] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. I, I like Dr. Seuss. He. He makes kind of good stories. And what's really funny is because n. And I like, recently watched the Lorcks, which was written by Dr. Seuss. [00:03:27] Speaker A: Correct. Yeah. I don't think the movie, like the transition to the movie would have been written by Dr. Seuss, but it would have been the booking. [00:03:42] Speaker B: Throwing the. Booked the movie. [00:03:44] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. And we were discussing earlier that we might, after the show, do some creative Dr. Seuss inspired crazy socks. So we'll see how we go. [00:03:59] Speaker B: Right. [00:04:00] Speaker A: See what we can come up with. So celebrating the work of Dr. Seuss and. Yeah. And then the next event is World Wildlife Day. I didn't read too much about that, but I. You could kind of guess what that's about raising awareness about, can't you? [00:04:22] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:04:23] Speaker A: What would you think that it's raising awareness about? [00:04:25] Speaker B: Raising awareness about animals and like, supporting them. [00:04:30] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. And looking after them and the conservation of wildlife and. And the habitats where they live, I. I would assume. Yeah. So that was the 3rd of March, and then on the 4th of March, it's pancake day, slash Shrove Day. Shrove Tuesday, sorry. And I was reading up about that. So, you know, I like to look at the. Why do we celebrate these days? And I, I thought originally, you know, before today I thought that we just made pancakes, but do you know, it's been around. That celebration has been around for hundreds of years. [00:05:13] Speaker B: What? [00:05:13] Speaker A: Yeah, hundreds of years. And it's a day that is celebrated the day before. Oh, what's it called? Ash Wednesday. I can't remember the other name for it. I should have written it down. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's a day of prayer and everything. And they don't eat. They fast for their prayer day. And so Pancake Tuesday, it is all about using up all the eggs and everything before they start fasting for their prayers. So not eating. Yeah. So they have a day of using up all the eggs so the eggs don't get spoiled or anything. And filling up their bellies with pancakes. And that's how Pancake Day came about was it was kind of a religious celebration that we've just taken as. Yum. Pancakes. [00:06:12] Speaker B: And then Ash Wednesday is when they just don't eat. [00:06:15] Speaker A: Yeah. So they. Yeah, they. And they fast for the day. I don't know how long they. They do that for in different cultures. They, they do that weeks where they don't eat during set times of the day. And it happens all over the world for religious beliefs and values. And. Yeah, that's how Pancake Day came about. Was. It was. But we, we don't see it as that. Like, we don't typically celebrate it as that unless you know about it. Yeah, yeah. So I think it's one of those ones that we've definitely taken on and adapted over. Over time. And that happens. And, you know, that's what Christmas and Easter is all about is. You know, we've adapted it over time, but it has religious origins. [00:07:15] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:07:17] Speaker A: And so then. Yeah, today is. I can't remember the other name. I'm going to look it up. But today is Ash Wednesday, and then on Saturday, we have International Women's Day. [00:07:31] Speaker B: What's that all about? [00:07:33] Speaker A: I think it's. Again, we need to do a lot of research into this one, but I think it's about looking at women's rights changing over time. You know how we talk about the fact that they used to be able to vote. They used to. Used to not be able to vote. Now they can. And it's celebrating that history in the making, kind of making sure that there's equality for women and men. So it's a big week. And when I looked at all the celebrations that are coming up, March is such a busy month. [00:08:14] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:15] Speaker A: Can you. Do you know why, like, we've got so many celebrations that we like. Obviously we're not gonna celebrate all of them. Every. That would just. Oh, my goodness. That would send me crazy trying to keep up. But can you think about why there might be so many celebrations all over the world like this? [00:08:37] Speaker B: Not really sure. [00:08:39] Speaker A: So I think, you know, when I sat down and reflected about why do we have so many options of which celebrations we can celebrate and whatnot, I think it's raising awareness. That's the purpose of them, is to either celebrate a moment in history or raise awareness about something. And that's why we have these special celebration days. [00:09:02] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:03] Speaker A: Yeah. So we will head to a song, I reckon. [00:09:07] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:08] Speaker A: And then when we get back, do you want to tell us about the event that happened last week that we're going to sneak in? Because it was. It's kind of special to you, right? [00:09:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:20] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:09:21] Speaker B: All right. [00:09:21] Speaker A: So what song are we going to head over to? [00:09:23] Speaker B: It Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. [00:09:29] Speaker A: The best music from the 60s to today. [00:09:33] Speaker B: IPL radio celebration that I wanted to talk about. [00:09:37] Speaker A: Yes. Which I was very interested in. It was last week. But we are talking about March celebrations, slash this week celebrations. And we've snuck in one that you really wanted to talk about. So I'm all ears. Tell me, what are we talking about? [00:09:56] Speaker B: Pokemon Day. I am very excited for this. I like Pokemon. [00:10:03] Speaker A: Yeah. Which is your favorite? [00:10:07] Speaker B: What do you mean? [00:10:08] Speaker A: Which Pokemon's your favorite? [00:10:12] Speaker B: Not sure. [00:10:15] Speaker A: Don't have a favorite yet. [00:10:16] Speaker B: Don't have a favorite. [00:10:17] Speaker A: Mine. Squirtle I like Squirtle. He's a little bit cute. [00:10:23] Speaker B: I actually have the Pokemon game. [00:10:25] Speaker A: You do? You do? And I enjoy playing it. [00:10:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:28] Speaker A: Yeah. Although, yeah, I think I need to play it a little bit more so I can get better at kicking your. [00:10:35] Speaker B: Bird because of right now. I'm the only one that's kicking butt right now. [00:10:39] Speaker A: Yes, yes. [00:10:42] Speaker B: And how. It was released in 1996. 27th of February. [00:10:56] Speaker A: Yeah. So when do we celebrate Pokemon day then? [00:11:03] Speaker B: On the 27th of February. Ah. [00:11:06] Speaker A: So we celebrate it on the release date. Yeah. So how do they celebrate it? [00:11:12] Speaker B: There's many ways you can celebrate it. You can get more Pokemon, get collect Pokemon cards. You can play Pokemon, like Pokemon video games and stuff like that. Yeah. And yeah. And didn't you say there's also tournaments? [00:11:37] Speaker A: Tournaments? [00:11:38] Speaker B: Really? Yeah. [00:11:40] Speaker A: Okay. That's pretty cool. [00:11:41] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. And I think it's been on the news once, at least. Yeah, it was definitely on btm. [00:11:48] Speaker A: You didn't you love that show? [00:11:49] Speaker B: Yeah, I do. It's like. It's like a young version of me news for appropriate stuff of news. [00:11:58] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. And did you say they. That's the day that they kind of reserved for releasing new product Pokemon products? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's pretty cool. So what else can you tell us about Pokemon Day? [00:12:16] Speaker B: It was like one of the creators of. It was inspired by. It was inspired by. [00:12:27] Speaker A: What was he inspired by? [00:12:29] Speaker B: He was. It was. He was inspired by his childhood hobby. [00:12:36] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:37] Speaker B: Collecting bugs. [00:12:39] Speaker A: No way. [00:12:40] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:12:41] Speaker A: That is actually that kind of makes sense when you think about the little. [00:12:46] Speaker B: The. [00:12:47] Speaker A: The bug looking Pokemon. [00:12:51] Speaker B: Squirtle, for example, that kind of looks like a turtle. [00:12:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:55] Speaker B: And. [00:12:55] Speaker A: And Squirtle, like. And then you think about like the turtle in Finding Nemo and. And there's Crush and Squirt. And I think it's Squirt, I think. But yeah, Squirtle. I like Squirtle. But what. What do you think Pikachu looks like? [00:13:17] Speaker B: That's a hard one. [00:13:18] Speaker A: I feel like it's like a little play on a bee or a bunny. [00:13:23] Speaker B: Yeah. Like I say. I say Bunny. [00:13:26] Speaker A: Bunny. Yeah. But then the colors remind me of a bee. [00:13:30] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:30] Speaker A: Yeah. So if, like, if you think about that bug, that passion with bug collecting. [00:13:36] Speaker B: Yeah, Yeah. A b. Yeah. We don't know. [00:13:42] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:45] Speaker B: And then. Yeah. [00:13:47] Speaker A: And so who illustrated the. The Pokemon? [00:13:53] Speaker B: His friend named Ken. [00:13:55] Speaker A: Okay, that's kind of cool. So it was like this team effort thing and then you told me another interesting fact that I was like, no way. And I actually Asked you to Google it to check. Check your facts. Right. How did it start? Like, I thought it started with the TV show, because that's what I rem. [00:14:13] Speaker B: Yeah. It actually started from a video game. [00:14:16] Speaker A: A video game. To me, that's crazy. Like, I. I don't even remember the video game. I remember the. The TV show, but I probably was too young for the. The video game if that was released in 1996. Maybe that's why I don't remember. I only remember the TV show and I remember watching it on the weekends. [00:14:38] Speaker B: Yeah. Wait, you watched the Pokemon show? [00:14:41] Speaker A: I did indeed. [00:14:45] Speaker B: So they sent it out to Nintendo and it was put on a Game Boy. And if you had a. Have a Game Boy and then had the Pokemon game, you can. It can actually. It's like black and white. [00:15:07] Speaker A: Okay. [00:15:07] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:08] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. I suppose back then it would have been. But yeah. Those are some interesting facts about Pokemon Day. I had no idea. So that is amazing. I wonder if any of our listeners have learnt some Pokemon facts with us today. Well, with me today. [00:15:27] Speaker B: Oh, and I want you to guess this. What country is Pokemon originated in? [00:15:42] Speaker A: Based on the TV show and that, like, anime kind of feel to it, I'd say Japan. Japan. [00:15:49] Speaker B: Correct. [00:15:52] Speaker A: Sorry about that little cough. Yeah. [00:15:55] Speaker B: Now I want to watch the show. [00:15:57] Speaker A: Now you want to watch it. Of course you do. Shall we head over to a song? [00:16:01] Speaker B: We should. [00:16:02] Speaker A: What are we going to go to? [00:16:04] Speaker B: Good Feeling by Flow Rider. [00:16:07] Speaker A: Fantastic. The best music from the 60s to today. IPL radio. And we are back here live from IPL radio here in Rockingham, Western Australia. [00:16:21] Speaker B: And it is time for our regular segment. Dad Jom. Boom Boom. [00:16:28] Speaker A: I don't have any for you again. What have you got for me today? [00:16:36] Speaker B: Why are frogs good at baseball? [00:16:39] Speaker A: I don't know. Why are frogs good at baseball? [00:16:42] Speaker B: Because they know how to catch a fly ball. [00:16:44] Speaker A: A fly ball. [00:16:47] Speaker B: Oh. [00:16:50] Speaker A: Oh, my goodness. I think I'm a little bit more embarrassed that I took a little bit to kind of get that one. It's funny. I like it. [00:17:00] Speaker B: Two fish for animal. We're in. Okay. We're in a tank. One turns to the other and says, any idea how to drive this thing? [00:17:18] Speaker A: Two fish were in. [00:17:20] Speaker B: Oh. [00:17:24] Speaker A: Got it. [00:17:26] Speaker B: Because it's a tank. [00:17:27] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. Had to think about that one. I can. These are good ones. You got me stumped on two. Two out of three. What's. What's the next one? Give me a go and give it to me. [00:17:37] Speaker B: Why do ducks have feathers on. On the. Feathers on their tails? [00:17:50] Speaker A: I don't know. Why do ducks have feathers on their tails? [00:17:53] Speaker B: To hide their butt quacks. [00:17:56] Speaker A: Oh, my goodness. That is funny. Shall we head to another song before we do our next regular segment? [00:18:08] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:18:08] Speaker A: Yeah. What have we got? [00:18:09] Speaker B: This is a fireball by Pit Bull and John Ryan. [00:18:17] Speaker A: Correct. The best music from the 60s to today. IPL radio. Are you on fire? Yes. We are back from IPL Radio. We are the family show. And we have our next regular segment, which is. [00:18:40] Speaker B: Let's learn Italian. [00:18:43] Speaker A: Yeah, let's learn some Italian. So because we were talking about some of the celebrations that we have here in March, I thought we could learn some months of the year in Italian. Yeah. So let's do the first three months of the year. So go Geneal. Which is January. [00:19:10] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:19:11] Speaker A: Febreo. [00:19:12] Speaker B: February. [00:19:16] Speaker A: Yeah. And what? Yeah, do the hands Always do the hands. Makes it easier, doesn't it? [00:19:23] Speaker B: I'm saying it. I'm doing it right now. And like the hand. [00:19:26] Speaker A: The hand motion makes it easier to say Italian. [00:19:29] Speaker B: We should make a video of what hand motion we're actually saying. Yeah, it's a radio station. They can't really see us. [00:19:34] Speaker A: Okay, well, maybe we. We need to do some of our reels on our social media page with. With our hands and expression. We. We actually do use our hands. [00:19:44] Speaker B: Looks like Italian. Like an Italian pizza kind of thing. [00:19:46] Speaker A: Yeah, well, we. Yeah, when, like, you're talking with your hands, it always helps. And march is muzzle, I think it was. [00:19:58] Speaker B: Again, with the hands. [00:19:59] Speaker A: With the hands. It always helps. But we will eventually. We're a little bit behind on posting on our socials at the moment, aren't we? It's been a very, very busy time. Yeah, Lots happening. Someone's been very busy with ice skating and some movie script writing. Or am I not meant to tell anyone about that? Songwriting, Songwriting. Yeah. So busy. So we will get there eventually posting that so that you can learn some Italian with us. And what was our socials? [00:20:39] Speaker B: The family show. IPL Radio. And we are on Facebook and Instagram. [00:20:49] Speaker A: Yeah, correct. [00:20:52] Speaker B: And we'll see you next week. [00:20:54] Speaker A: Oh, you're just gonna shut us off like that. Yeah. So that is it from us today. Thank you for joining us. And we would love to hear what activities that. Or, you know, special celebrations from this week that you are celebrating. We're definitely gonna go and try and make some Dr. Seuss inspired crazy socks. Right. And then I think we. Yeah, we'll. We'll go from there, see what else we. We pick up and celebrate. But yeah, we'd love to hear what you're celebrating and we are wishing you a lovely afternoon. And yeah, that's it from us today. [00:21:36] Speaker B: Yeah, this is Dream on by Aerosmith.
